Our standard finish is how the Gatling gun looked when accepted by the Army "back in the day".
The 1874 - 1879 Standard Finish
All steel parts, frame, barrels, screws and so on, are left "in the white" or "bright" with no protective finish such as browning or bluing. However, we use a commercially available product called "Renaissance", which is a microcrystalline wax developed for museum use, to protect the bare steel. The barrels and the frame are polished to 240, and the bronze parts are polished to 320 but are not buffed to mirror finish. Tripod legs are sanded, stained, and finished with Tung oil. Metal parts of the Camel gun tripod are bronze, polished to 320, while the metal parts of the "musket length" tripods are painted black.
The 1895-1903 Standard Finish
The barrels are polished to 240 and browned, the frame is polished to 240 and blued, and all external bronze parts are polished to 320 and painted olive drab. All other steel parts are left in the white but protected with "Renaissance". Tripod legs are sanded, stained, and finished with Tung oil. Metal tripod parts are painted black and the "aiming lever" is browned.
Replica Model 1875 Gatling gun with ten "Musket Length" (32 inch) barrels in .45-70 with Bruce Adaptor Feed or 40 round magazines; oscillator and tripod.
The Model 1875 was an improved Model 1874. The 1875 featured a fixed front sight, an improved ejection port in the left frame rail and a slightly different feed hopper to aid in ejection of empty cartridges.
Replica Model 1877 Gatling gun with ten "Musket Length" (32 inch) barrels in .45-70 with Bruce Adapter Feed or 40 round magazines; oscillator and tripod.
The Model 1877 was an improvement over the earlier models in that it had an improved feed hopper and a faster pitch to the worm and worm gear for an increased rate of fire. In addition, the Model 1877 was the last model to be equipped with the oscillator mechanism which had proved to be cumbersome in use.
Replica Model 1879 Gatling gun with ten "musket length" barrels (32 inch) barrels in .45-70 with Bruce Adaptor Feed or 40 round magazines; and tripod.
The Model 1879 Gatling is essentially the same as the Model 1877 but with one major difference. The Model 1879 was the first Gatling to have the aiming lever instead of the cumbersome oscillator of the earlier guns. The aiming lever system allowed the gun to be aimed with one hand and fired with the other.
